About Us

The mission of the Pacific Institute for Women's Health is to improve the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls around the globe via advocacy, public education, program development, training and research.

An area of expertise also includes reproductive health access in pharmacy settings, led by Pharmacy Access Partnership, a center of PIWH.

With a focus on underserved populations, we envision a world in which women and girls are empowered to manage their own sexual and reproductive health.

PIWH embraces a reproductive justice frame that considers the social, economic, cultural and political ramifications of policies and events that impact women’s health and autonomy overall.

Our work is guided by three central themes:

REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE

We work to strengthen social justice movements, so that collectively we secure and protect the human rights of people around the world, including their right to sexual and reproductive freedom.  Through inclusive programs and policy initiatives, we engage diverse communities, especially those that have traditionally been excluded from positions of power, including young people, immigrant and communities of color, and people living in poverty.

We also focus on increasing access to the full range of reproductive choices, including access to safe, legal abortion.

SEXUAL JUSTICE

We believe in increasing young people's access to comprehensive sexuality education. Providing these educational tools enables young people with the skills and resources to protect their sexual and reproductive health. Simultaneously, we explore ways to increase understanding, acceptance and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

GENDER JUSTICE

Our programs are designed to empower girls with the necessary information and tools they need to defend their rights, protect their health, manage their sexuality and reproduction and become strong community advocates.

We advance the following strategies:

  • We take a rights-based approach to improving health care access
  • We emphasize policy change within the state of California – a state that is often a national and international trendsetter
  • We cultivate a network of diverse alliances and a broad range of stakeholders across local, state, national and international levels
  • We seek to achieve long-term impact by building a cadre of leaders in diverse fields, including pharmacists, who will champion women’s reproductive health
  • We facilitate programs in California, nationally and internationally, and seek to share lessons learned across borders
