PIWH Pacific Institute for Women's Health

History

The Pacific Institute for Women’s Health was founded in 1993 by a group of feminist researchers and public health experts (including Carole Browner, Francine Coeytaux, S. Marie Harvey, Joanne Leslie, Barbara Pillsbury and Jane Rubin-Kurtzman) who sought to address a wide range of pressing health issues affecting women and girls.

From 1993 to 1999, PIWH operated under the umbrella of the non-profit Public Health Institute. PIWH became an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in January 2000, with a focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

In May 2008, after a year-long exploration process funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, PIWH merged with Pharmacy Access Partnership, a former center of the Public Health Institute. Belle Taylor-McGhee serves as PIWH President and CEO and Sharon Cohen Landau, MPH, serves are Director of Pharmacy Access Partnership, now a center of PIWH.
